ONE of the most significant monuments celebrating Keilor’s rich military history will undergo an upgrade.
The cenotaph, which stands in front of Brimbank Council offices, will be enhanced to include four columns along the perimeter of the enclosure.
President of the Keilor Historical Society, Susan Jennison, said the group decided to revamp the monument, which has stood proudly in the city for over 50 years, after receiving a $10,000 Government grant.
Ms Jennison said the group would work with Brimbank Council to create a monument which would offer a lasting legacy to men and women who served their country, many of which paid the ultimate sacrifice.
The four columns will list the names of soldiers from both world wars and will acknowledge the crucial role nurses played.
“People can walk past the site at any time and see these names,” Ms Jennison said.
“It’s all about memories and the site is part of our living history.”
The community advocate said the works will serve to enrich the site, which has been under threat inthe past. She said it was particularly important for younger people tovisit the tribute and develop a betterunderstanding of the significant role the military service plays in Keilor’slong history.
The works are due to be completed by next year, when it is hoped an exhibition of the project will take place.
