DAVID Vella brings a little magic to life in Brimbank.
The professional magician, who lives in Sunshine West, became interested in the art of conjuring as a child and around 15 years ago, he began to teach himself tricks from books and DVDs.
From there, he graduated to performing for family and friends, as well as volunteering to entertain children at community centres.
He now runs a small business called “Amazing David” and performs across Melbourne at birthdays, Christmas events, schools, childcare centres and community functions for children aged four to 10.
“I’ve got lots of tricks. It’s taken me years of practice and I’m always perfecting them all the time. Basically, practice makes perfect,” Mr Vella said.
“I enjoy watching children being excited and being happy and having a lot of fun. I enjoy watching kids getting laughter and happiness out of my job.”
“If kids want to know how a trick works, I say, ‘A good magician never reveals his tricks’. Instead I teach them a simple trick they can use to impress their friends’.”
The multi-talented magician can make streamers vanish, cards turn blank, blocks disappear and also incorporates music, dancing and balloon-modelling into his show.
Mr Vella mainly performs his magic shows on weekends, and he works full-time as a CSIRO research officer during the week.
His conjuring act is a family affair, with his wife Michelle, a face-painter, often joining him at children’s parties.
Their three daughters, aged five, eight and 10, have also picked up some of their father’s magic skills.
“I’m hoping in the future I’ll get them involved in the show with karaoke. They’ve mastered a couple of tricks. Hopefully they’ll grow up and take over,” Mr Vella said.
