SINCE Christmas Day, Brimbank SES members have had just one day without a call.
On every other day they have faced a flood of calls from residents affected by the ferocious storms last month.
None of the members were able to spend the holiday with their family, also missing out on a day of presents, good food and festivity.
It’s a commitment not many people could take on, but for 30 years members of the Brimbank SES have been happy to help.
This March will mark the anniversary of the unit, which was set up in 1982 with just 10 members.
Current Unit Controller Brad Dalgleish said the SES was then funded through the council, with less training and equipment.
“The guys would be lucky to get one pair of overalls,” Mr Dalgleish said.
“When you look at uniforms, safety, training now it’s very, very different (today).”
Now the Brimbank SES have more than 50 members, who are trained to deal with everything from first aid to fires to road trauma.
Each member with basic training is worth around $3,500, with costs for training and a massive $1000 spent on a uniform.
Mr Dalgleish, who has been a member since 1990, admitted that it wasn’t the average volunteer job.
“With us the guys train every Monday night, they need to make themselves available for courses weekends, nights, weekdays, and then to calls for assistance,” he said.
“The past three weeks have been a classic – we’ve had in excess of 1750 jobs come through so we’ve had to utilise every member and expertise.”
On the 30th anniversary the unit will hold a dinner bringing together past and present members as thanks.
The unit are looking for donations for door prizes and auctions on the night, as well as sponsorships for the event.
