THE self-appointed Gellibabies sound like they would be a fun bunch of people.
But while members enjoy having a good laugh, their primary role is much more serious.
In its official guise as the Point Gellibrand Rotary Club, the group has more than fulfilled its aim of giving back to the community.
It has helped dozens of western suburbs’ children with cancer and their families through the Challenge Cancer Support Network, as well as disadvantaged kids, whom they help send to weekend camps with Open Family.
The efforts helped earn the group Rotary’s New Generations Award for District 9800 earlier this month.
The club funds its projects through a variety of community events, including the Big Bay Swim from Port Melbourne to Williamstown, involving the Sandridge and Williamstown Life Saving Clubs and other community groups.
The Gellibabies meet at the Royal Victorian Motor Yacht Club in Nelson Place for a couple of hours on Tuesday evenings to have a meal, enjoy an interesting guest speaker and, of course, have a bit of fun.
