THE Bryan Martyn Oval Pavilion in Newport will get a facelift.
Hobsons Bay City Council announced last Tuesday that it had contracted Australian Commercial Builders to give the dilapidated sportsground a fresh lease of life.
Councillor Peter Hemphill said the upgrade was a fitting tribute to the work of the late Bryan Martyn, a North Melbourne Football Club great and father of footballer Mick Martyn.
Cr Hemphill said Mr Martyn was “like the doyen of the Newport Football Club” who had put a lot of time and effort into building the original pavilion.
The council’s capital works budget includes $425,000 for the staged upgrade works at the oval, including a $50,000 grant from Sports and Recreation Victoria.
The first stage of the redevelopment will see a new roof for the function room, the addition of a new verandah, alterations to the entry area and new windows and doors in the south wall of the pavilion. A new concrete path around the building will also be part of the first stage of works.
The next work stages will focus on redeveloping kitchen, toilet and changeroom facilities.
The initial phase of the works has a target completion date of 30 October 2007.
