WILLIAMSTOWN-based club Barnstoneworth United Junior Football Club has been helping new migrants integrate into the community through its Building Bridges through Soccer program.
Six children from migrant families have started with the club this year.
With the help of a grant from the Hobsons Bay City Council, as well as input from the New Hope Foundation, the children from Burma and Eritrea will have the opportunity to play with the club as part of a two-year program.
“The boys are a great bunch of kids who really want to play soccer and enjoy the game,” club president Simon Hussey said.
Hussey said the success of the club has been because of its mission to provide a family friendly, inclusive environment for all boys and girls.
“In our just our fourth season, we have nearly 300 players which is truly amazing for such a young club.  But I really believe it’s because people enjoy being part of the Barnies community where parents and players from a wide range of origins, such as myself, have come together to create something for our children,” he said.
