THE Green Gully Cavaliers have survived and will again feature in the Victorian Premier League finals series after picking up the full six points on offer in two crucial matches over the past week.
Needing to score its second win in five days against the Dandenong Thunder at home on Sunday, the Cavaliers delivered in spades on their way to a 3-1 win, with sharp shooter Jason Hayne delivering the killer blow at the death to secure Gully its 13th successive VPL finals appearance.
However, Sunday didn’t quite go to plan for local rival Melbourne Knights, who suffered a heavy 4-2 loss at home to the Oakleigh Cannons.
The floodgates opened in the second half at Knights Stadium with five of the game’s six goals coming after the half time whistle.
Despite that poor result the Knights still finished second on the VPL table with 37 points for the season and will host the Bentleigh Greens this Sunday in a qualifying final.
Meanwhile, Green Gully faces sudden death in its elimination final battle with fourth-placed South Melbourne, who will host the match at Lakeside Stadium on Sunday.
