More park bins plea

The Cambridge, Coburn and Watts Residents Association (CCWRA) is calling on Melton City Council to install more rubbish bins at Navan Park.
At last week’s council meeting, CCWRA president Nathan Miles asked the council to invest in more bins at the popular park.
Mr Miles told Star the bins become particularly full over the weekend and during summer when families enjoy the barbecue facilities or host a party at the park.
He said with the warmer weather fast approaching, the group was fearful the park would become an eysore with litter strewn all over.
“It’s probably the best park in the municipality … and as the warmer months approach, there are a lot of people there that use the park,” he said.
“The problem is the barbecue area … there a four barbecues in each section and not enough bins.”
Mr Miles said rubbish often got strewn across the park and could end up in the river, leading to a safety hazard for native flora and fauna.
He said graffiti and vandalism was also a problem in the area and play equipment was often left broken for weeks on end.
Melton City Council’s general manager for planning and development Luke Shannon said the council would review the number of bins at the park.
Anyone found committing a littering offence in the City of Melton can be fined from $144 or up to over $8500. Offenders may be summoned to appear in court.
