MORE than 150 townhouse lots, up to 50 apartments and new industrial areas are being considered for Cairnlea.
Places Victoria has revised its masterplan of the proposed 38-hectare Cairnlea Mixed Use Precinct, next to the recently-completed Cairnlea estate.
Places Victoria’s general manager of major projects, Peter Armstrong, said the revised plan included 156 townhouse lots, up to 50 apartments and 80 commercial sites.
Places Victoria is also seeking to have the site included within a Comprehensive Development Zone “to allow for an improved and more gradual transition from residential areas to commercial facilities”.
A map of the proposed precinct also shows Places Victoria hopes to gain permission for industrial premises, a park and bicycle path to be built next to the “old tip”.
Cairnlea was built on the site of the former Albion Explosives Factory site, which the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) tested for contamination levels in 2011.
The EPA found the site was “unlikely to pose an unacceptable risk to residents”.
Mr Armstrong said the revised Cairnlea plan would widen the range of commercial premises to include retail and small-scale townhouses or warehouse buildings.
The connection of Jones and Kororoit Creeks, planting approximately 750 native trees and road integration are also included in the plan.
To have a say on the plan, Cairnlea residents have been invited to attend information sessions on Wednesday 2 October from 5-8pm at the Cairnlea Croquet Club and Saturday 5 October from 10am-1pm at the Cairnlea Community Hub.
“The information sessions are an informal opportunity for interested members of the local community to learn about the proposed business and residential precinct from project staff, ask questions and contribute towards shaping the final plan,” Mr Armstrong said.
