TRAIN commuters travelling on the Watergardens and Werribee lines are the most dissatisfied on the Melbourne train network, according to a new survey.
Last week the RACV released the results of its On Track Survey, which showed three per cent of passengers on the Sunbury line (including the Watergardens line) and Werribee were the “least happy” with the trains they caught.
Only six per cent of Williamstown line passengers were happy with their trains.
In contrast, 19 per cent of Alamein line commuters were happy with their rail service.
More than 4600 commuters took part in this year’s RACV survey, which showed Sunbury travellers topped the list of commuters concerned about personal safety and security on trains.
Elsewhere in the West, 17 per cent of people travelling between Spotswood and Seddon stations, 13 per cent of Williamstown commuters and 11 per cent of Werribee passengers rated their trains as “too crowded”.
Ten per cent of Werribee, Williamstown and City Loop travellers also said their trains were “not on time”.
The RACV’s manager of public transport and mobility, Thanuja Gunatillake, said the On Track Survey showed “frustration” with infrequent late services and overcrowding on trains.
“These survey findings show that investment in rail services and infrastructure has not kept up with the state’s population growth,” Ms Gunatillake said.
“At the moment, train services are being constrained by the lack of capacity on the rail system in Melbourne, particularly on the busy Dandenong rail corridor, in the western suburbs and in the city loop.”
Ms Gunatillake also said while the RACV would like funds committed to build the Metro Rail Tunnel project, the finished Regional Rail Link project would improve the lot of commuters in the West.
“We would expect that the completion of the Regional Rail Link project in Melbourne’s West in 2016 will help commuters as the project allows for an extra 23 metropolitan and 10 regional services during each morning and evening peak period,” she said.
