IT is something his parents thought he would never do but nine-year-old Maxwell is stepping up to the challenge and will ‘be brave and shave’ this March.
The Leukaemia Foundations’ annual World’s Greatest Shave events will run over the weekend of 13 to 16 March and the St Peter’s Catholic School student is ready to take the challenge.
Maxwell Hutchesson has already helped raise over $5000 since signing up at the end of last year.
Originally the ambitious youngster wanted to raise $50,000 for the charity but has opted to try and get to $25,000.
“I’m doing the World’s Greatest Shave to raise money for kids with leukaemia,” he said.
“I’m hoping to raise a lot of money by shaving off this mop of hair.”
His much-loved ‘mop’ is such a big part of Maxwell that his parents were shocked when he said he wanted to shave it off for the cause.
“For Max to say that was a shock because we can’t even get him to cut his hair on a good day because he loves his hair,” his mother Vanessa said.
Ms Hutchesson said she was looking forward to see her son’s new look once he shaves his bright red curls.
“He has had big muppet hair for such a long time,” she said.
“You can see him anywhere because you can see this big red hair bouncing everywhere.”
The family have sent out flyers across the school and Max has been dropping off flyers to local shops to raise awareness and gain support.
“I admire him for doing it because I know how much he loves his hair,” Ms Hutchesson said.
“We are very proud of him.”
Maxwell will shave his hair at a public event held at the Eureka Tower on Friday 14 March at 4.30pm.
