NEWPORT scouts have a new roof on their Market St hall thanks to a much-needed gift of cash.
The old tin roof had become so dilapidated that wind and rain – and various species of birds – were beginning to make an impact on the scout meetings.
Rain had also caused damage to ceiling panels and walls at the back of the building.
Enter the Freemasons, who raised enough cash from 17 chapters around Melbourne to install a new roof on the hall and keep the weather out.
Freemasons district coordinator Bob Jones said the two groups shared many common values and the organisation was happy to help.
Kevin Stevens, spokesman for the Newport scouts, said the offer of help had come along at the perfect time, as they were contemplating dipping into funds reserved for the annual jamboree gathering later this year.
“The Freemasons have really come to our aid,” Mr Stevens said.
“We’ve got a nice shiny roof up there now which is just what we need with winter coming.”
