Pedalling rules for the day

A KENSINGTON woman will ride 40 kilometres to her Werribee workplace on Ride to Work Day, next month.
And for Jasmina Stanic, it’s not a once off.
Twice a week, the 26-year-old spends up to two hours to pedal one way to her desk in Kookaburra Avenue, where she works for Wyndham City Council.
Ms Stanic, a neighbourhood renewal officer for Heathdale Community Centre, has been motivating staff by sharing ride safety tips and road rules.
Representing neighbouring Hobsons Bay City Council, is West Melbourne resident Anne McLean.
The 36-year-old is spearheading her council’s effort and is also calling for more colleagues and the wider community to get on board.
Ms McLean only moved into her new home three weeks ago, so hasn’t practised the ride to council offices where she has worked for five months.
A regular cyclist as a teen, Ms McLean got into the habit again in Japan.
Since arriving back in Australia four years ago, she stuck to alternative transport and spreads the word through her job.
Her role as sustainable transport project officer involves motivating people to avoid using cars.
Ride to Work Day is on Wednesday 4 October. For details, call Bicycle Victoria on 1800 616 600.
On Ride to Work Day, the emphasis is off tight fitting lycra outfits for Ms McLean, who tends to ride in normal clothes.
“I don’t recommend high heels, but everything else is fine,” she said.
“I just started the registrations, I have six, but would love more.”
Ride to Work Day is on Wednesday 4 October and there is still plenty of time to sign up with your workplace.
