SEVEN students at Victoria University Secondary College in St Albans are providing their peers with guidance on their potential future careers.
Year 10 pupils Edward, Jacob, Mason, Monica, Nicole, Ross and Sian have all signed on as Beacon student ambassadors.
The Beacon Foundation is a national non-profit organisation which works with more than 110 secondary schools across all Australia.
At Victoria University Secondary College, the Beacon student ambassadors organise events such as ‘speed careering days’ for their classmates, to meet business leaders and hear first-hand what it is like to work in various industries.
Fifteen-year-old Sian said all the Beacon student ambassadors volunteered for the roles and went through an interview process.
“We get involved with business leaders and get an idea of what is involved in each of their careers, then come back and we can tell our peers what they do and help each other find careers we might like,” she said.
The student ambassadors organised a speed careering day at Victoria University Secondary College last Tuesday.
Engineers, nurses, lawyers, tradespeople and an educational psychologist were among the speakers who attended the event.
Victoria University Secondary College staff member Robert Bertagnolio said all the Beacon student ambassadors did a wonderful job.
“Mr Bertagnolio puts it all into our hands. We have to personally find the business leaders and mentors, and call them up and ask them to help out with the day,” Sian said.
“For me the highlight is that I really like organising things and getting people involved, other students interested and the whole thing has been lots of fun.”
Sian said she wanted to pursue a career as a forensic psychiatrist or psychologist upon graduating from school, and is also interested in make-up artistry and photography.
