A CAROLINE Springs man had his new sports car impounded earlier this month after driving almost 80km over the speed limit.
Melton’s Leading Senior Constable Allan Edwards said the 49-year-old male reached speeds of 178km per hour on Plumpton Rd, between Taylors Rd and Melton Hwy, while driving a Toyota 86 sports car that he had purchased only two months prior to the incident.
Snr Const Edwards said the car was immediately impounded and police may apply for a further period of impoundment due to the detected speed being in excess of 70km/h.
He will be charged on summons with exceeding the speed limit and driving at a dangerous speed.
This latest incident adds to the growing number of impoundments in Melton this year. Police have seized 89 vehicles to date, while neighbouring Brimbank police have impounded 174 cars.
The majority of impounds have been for male drivers with a suspended or disqualified licence.
