MATHEW Montebello will coach the Williamstown CYMS Football Club in 2013.
After an impressive stint working with the club’s juniors during the last few years, Montebello will take over the top job from out-going coach Ian Rickman.
His official title will be the director of coaching with his new role at the club set to include overseeing the development of all Williamstown teams.
“It is putting the whole CYs footy under one system. So from 18s, 19s thirds or clubbies, reserves and seniors we are more of one club,” Montebello said.
“The last couple of years, trying to build up the underage system, we have sort of operated a little bit separately from the senior group and there probably hasn’t been the development that I would like to see as a whole club.
“My role will be to make sure the under 18s, 19s and seniors understand and have an appreciation of each other.”
After taking the Williamstown under 19’s side to a grand final this year, Montebello will continue to work with the CY’s impressive group of young stars as the club looks to continue its commitment to junior development.
“Once a week I will go to the under 18’s and 19’s training and I will take groups aside and do development work with them,” Montebello said.
“That is where I see a big importance so that the relationship between the senior coach is not just worrying about his own side. I think some clubs can focus on that a bit too much.
The CYs are coming off a tough year in the Victorian Amateur Football Association after injuries halted the side’s run towards finals in the Division One competition.
The club finished with five wins and 13 losses for the season.
“I think we had a lot of injuries. Fifty three players played in the seniors this year which is a huge number and I think 70 something played in the reserves,” Montebello said.
“I will be putting out my feelers to try and get some quality people and players to the football club.
“There is a really strong core base of younger 20 year olds and mid 20 year olds who are also coming through.
“We can really start to build a strong base so that in five years’ time we can really start to push towards playing in the Premier Division of Premier B.
“That is where I would really like to be and I think that would be a great achievement for the footy club.”
