A SPOTSWOOD bar was fined $25,000 for failing to fix up safety hazards found by building inspectors last September.
The Spotiswoode Hotel was found to be in breach of several building, safety and fire regulations, including a lack of smoke detectors and insufficient exit and emergency lighting.
It also had a rotting fire exit stairway, which Hobsons Bay Council building inspectors ordered to be demolished and rebuilt.
Although the inspections were made nearly a year ago, the hotel’s owner, Geneva Court Pty Ltd, acted only after being issued charges and summons.
Hobsons Bay mayor Leigh Hardinge said he hoped the fine sent a clear message to businesses that the council would not tolerate violations of building orders, especially those relating to public health and safety.
