IT’S BEEN a source of amusement, confusion and frustration for years and now Brimbank City Council will eliminate one of the two Susan streets in the municipality.
Susan St in Albion and Susan St in Sunshine West are less than 2.4 kilometres apart and even share the same postcode.
Susan St in Albion was named in the 1960s, while the Sunshine West street was named in 2008.
The council will consult with the 13 residents in Sunshine West about renaming their street Sarah St, which was chosen to pay tribute to the wife of Hugh Victor McKay, the founder of the Sunshine Harvester Works.
General Manager of Governance and Community Relations Helen Morrissey said in her report to council that the name change would alleviate confusion for residents and services, as well as risk issues for emergency services.
In one case reported to council, a resident had his utilities disconnected, reconnected and was billed twice – once for his address in Albion and secondly for an address in Sunshine West.
Administrator Meredith Sussex said there would be some confusion and inconvenience for residents in Sunshine West.
But she said it was a new area, with far less residents than in Susan St, Albion.
“If we’re going to do it, we should do it now,” Ms Sussex said.
