TWO people have been seriously injured after crashing into power poles during a horror week on Brimbank’s roads.
A 29-year-old Deer Park man was left fighting for his life after his car crashed into a power pole in Sunshine just before midnight on Tuesday.
Rescue crews spent half an hour working to free the unconscious man who had been trapped in the car.
“He was unconscious and extensively trapped so we had very limited access to him,” intensive care paramedic Robbie Simpson said.
“We were able to readjust the way he was sitting and clear his airway, but we weren’t able to get a drip into him at that stage.”
He was placed in an induced coma and taken to hospital with significant head, facial and chest injuries.
The accident caused chaos at the crash site, with the intersection of Wright St and Fairbairn Rd closed for most of the day, while crews worked to clear the scene and remove the power pole. It was the second serious collision on Brimbank’s roads in four days.
On 15 July, a Hoppers Crossing man was taken to The Alfred hospital after crashing into a power pole on Fitzgerald Rd in Sunshine West.
The 33-year-old lost control of his motorcycle as he passed through the roundabout at the intersection of Glengala Rd, mounting the kerb and colliding with a power pole.
The man was thrown from his motorcycle and suffered serious head injuries. Police said the man held an expired learner permit and believe inexperience may have played a role in the incident. Detectives are also investigating whether the driver was speeding at the time of the accident.
Police are also seeking witnesses to the crash. Anyone with any information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
