WHAT happens to a ball of paper when you throw it away?
That is the question Overnewton Anglican College student Elizabeth Duong wanted answered when she created her first short film.
The environmental crusader is a finalist in the Australian Centre for the Moving Image Screen It competition, for her piece The Environment: Who Cares?
Elizabeth, 15, said her film, which followed the adventures of a ball of paper carelessly thrown out of a window, was designed to examine the impact mankind had on the environment.
“I looked at how mankind has destroyed most of nature,” the Burnside Heights resident said.
“The story follows the highlights and lowlights of the environment.”
The competition attracted more than 250 entries from over 820 students nation-wide and the motivated Year 10 student said she was happy to just be a finalist.
“I don’t mind if I don’t win. I’m just happy being in the finals.”
Taking many hours to complete, the film is a stop motion, which means a series of close to 200 photos were put together to make the film. Describing the experience as very intense, Elizabeth hopes to expand her media career via YouTube.
However, despite her love of film, she sees it as more of a hobby, and hopes to pursue a career in engineering.
Judged by a panel of industry experts, winners of the ACMI award will be announced in November.
