WITH almost 40 year’s experience under his belt Joe Wise could be considered as the king of the bowling greens.
The still sprightly 96-year-old hits the lawn twice a week for a friendly game with his team-mates at the Sunshine RSL Bowling Club.
But Mr Wise could have a little competition on his hands with a new kid on the block joining the club’s ranks.
Since making his bowls debut earlier this year, 11-year-old Stefan Attard has caused quite a stir, giving the club’s more experienced players a run for their money.
“He absolutely loves it,” Stefan’s mum Annette said.
“He’s tried everything from athletics to soccer but he just didn’t like any of them.
“But he started doing bowls this year and he hasn’t looked back.
“He adores it.”
The Grade 6 Cairnlea Park Primary School student can’t get enough when it comes to aiming for the elusive jack.
“It’s really fun,” he said.
“I prefer bowling with adults because you learn a lot. But sometimes I beat them.”
Mr Wise believes the youngster could have a slight edge over more senior players.
“The younger they start, the better they get,” Mr Wise said.
The pensioner has been playing bowls for the past 36 years, a hobby that has helped keep him fit and healthy.
“I can still play at 96 and I think that’s a pretty good effort,” Mr Wise said.
“I’m not as good as I was at 66 but I’m still going.”
Club president Frank Smith called on past and present members to attend the celebrations, which will be held on 28 November.
