ALTONA Sports is quickly becoming a dangerous force on the western suburbs bowling scene.
After an improved year in 2012, the club took the next step this Victorian Pennant Bowls season.
Altona Sports won its Division Three section premiership and then went on to finish runners-up in the Division Three Metropolitan competition.
Club coach Glenn Maxwell was delighted with his side’s effort particularly after finishing the home and away season in fourth spot on the ladder.
“Finishing fourth meant we had to go and play the top side at their home ground. We ended up beating them by about 40 shots,” he said.
“Winning that game guaranteed us promotion into Division Two.
“The following day, we played Newport for the grand final in our section and we beat them by a shot which was great.”
Altona Sports also went on to beat Narre Warren and Clayton convincingly before just coming up short against Hurstbridge in the Division Three Metropolitan grand final.
The news only gets better for the club as it prepares to move into Division Two, with a brand new grass green just months away.
Having previously played on a carpet green, Maxwell said having both surfaces will be a huge advantage to his side.
“The beauty of that is, when we play away now, we also have that grass green so we can practise on both greens,” he said.
“When we play away we don’t need to be thinking that we are going to struggle. We can practise on grass all week and be ready for that mob on Saturday.
“That gives us the ability to have everything ready to go for each Saturday which is a good position to be in.”
Altona Sports will also have a new clubhouse for round one next season.
