Riders find it

LYCRA-clad enthusiasts, part-time cyclists and ramblers of all ages will soon enjoy improved bike paths in Altona Meadows and Laverton.
Hobsons Bay City Council plans to run the Skeleton Creek Trail under the Point Cook Road Bridge in Seabrook, and extend the trail between Vista Court and Boronia Court, in Altona Meadows.
A council spokesman said work would begin on the next stage of the Laverton Creek Trail, from Victoria St towards Queen St, also in Altona Meadows.
He said the council had not received written confirmation from the State Government about the amount of funding it would receive for the bike path improvements, but said the projects would begin soon.
John Mellusco, of local cyclists’ group Pelican Peddlers, said walkers and riders alike would appreciate the improvements to the trail network.
“There are still areas where the paths have to be put in but, as they are connecting, it’s making the ride more comfortable and enjoyable.”
“You can see the development of the cycle path. People are really enjoying the rides.
“I think the belief is that it should be one continuous trail, but there are parts that were underdeveloped.
“In the past, we had to leave the path but in the Altona Meadows area we don’t have to do that any more. That trail is now complete.”
Mr Mellusco said sealed paths were important in giving riders, especially the younger and inexperienced, a greater sense of confidence, and a feeling of safety in all weather conditions.
“It’s about people knowing that it is there and feeling safe and secure going out.”
Mr Mellusco said more people, including school groups and walking groups, used bike paths as the network grew and more links were created between trails.
