MELTON City Mayor Kathy Majdlik wants younger members of the community to be more involved in council.
At last week’s Ordinary Council Meeting, Cr Majdlik put forward a notice of motion calling for council officers to investigate the possibility of starting a Junior Council in the municipality.
The motion was unanimously supported by her fellow councillors.
Cr Majdlik told Star she had been approached by a number of young people in the community who were interested in taking part in the council.
“It would be more tokenistic…but it would be good for them to see the democratic process,” Cr Majdlik said.
She said a junior council would give younger members of the community a voice and would offer the council a unique insight.
“We would take notice of what they want.
“Sometimes it’s hard to engage with younger people, but I think it’s really important they understand how local government works.
“And who knows, they might be the next leaders of this city.”
