UPGRADED speed cameras on the Western Ring Rd will be activated next month.
The cameras, located to the west of Sydney Rd, will detect motorists in east and west-bound lanes.
The cameras, which were deactivated during road works on the Ring Rd, will be set to sense excessive speeds.
Message signs were placed along the road last week to warn drivers the cameras would soon be switched back on.
A Victoria Police statement said the cameras would be activated sometime in the week of 6 February.
The variable messaging signs will stay in place for a fortnight afterwards.
During a four-week test period, the cameras detected more than 10,900 speeding offences, including more than 9530 in the eastern lanes and 1410 in the western lanes.
Almost 180 drivers were caught travelling more than 25km over the speed limit, which would normally lead to a loss of licence.
Another 25 drivers would have had their cars impounded for travelling at more than 45km higher the speed limit.
Road Policing Command Acting Superintendent, David Griffin, said it was disappointing some people continued to take risks on the road.
“Speed is a major factor in around a third of fatal collisions each year, so it’s concerning to find that some drivers are still travelling at excessive speeds and putting lives at risk,” he said.
“We are giving drivers plenty of warning that these cameras will be enforcing, so that people have every opportunity to do the right thing.
“This is a timely reminder to slow down, pay attention and ensure you are driving within the speed limit at all times.”
