TO raise awareness about organ and tissue donation, members from Hobsons Bay police, the Metropolitan Fire Brigade, Ambulance Victoria, Youth Services and Year 9 students from local secondary schools took part in a basketball challenge last Tuesday.
The round robin tournament saw teams from across the bay compete for the cause but only two teams could make it to the grand final.
Young girls from Mount St Joseph’s Girls College took on members from Hobsons Bay police in the grand final challenge.
And though they put up a hell of a fight, with the game going into overtime – the police team proved to be too much for the girls in the end.
But there were no hard feelings with everyone feeling like winners at the end of the day.
The day’s activities were based around the theme ‘Ask and Know Your Loved Ones’ Wishes’ because in Australia, the family will always be asked to confirm the donation wishes before donation can proceed.
Altona Lion’s Club President Kerry Cook said the day was a success and fun for all teams involved.
“The competition has been good and a great way to get out and have fun,” she said.
“Just watching them play has been amazing.”
DonateLife Week was last week.
The goal for the week is to encourage all Australians to talk about organ and tissue donation and to discuss their donation decision with the people closest to them.
