Council solves problem by halves

A PARCEL of Williamstown land that had been fought over by nearby residents and the users of a community centre has been divided between the two.
About half of the 180 square metres of grassed land adjacent the corner of Council Lane and Cecil St will be fenced off for a children’s playground for the Williamstown Community and Education Centre.
The remainder will be used as an open green space.
More than 20 residents had objected to the plan because they wanted to keep the entire block as an informal park.
The Hobsons Bay City Council voted to use natural grass and existing landscaping as much as possible, and fence the area “sensitive to the neighbourhood setting”.
The council also agreed to remove the playground should the centre close or stop providing children’s programs.
