WILLIAMSTOWN was dominant from the opening bounce to the closing siren in securing a 176-point win against Bendigo in round seven of the VFL. In what looked like a mismatch on paper, the powerful Seagulls outfit was bolstered further with the inclusion of Western Bulldogs listed player and one of the club’s great players throughout the past decade, Daniel Cross.
Williamstown wasted no time getting on top in the contest, booting seven goals in the opening quarter to break out to a 42-point lead at the first break.
That proved to be just a warm up for the Seagulls as they backed up that performance with 13 goals in the second term.
From there, the only question left was how big the margin would be.
Fourteen Williamstown players kicked at least one goal in the win. The standouts were Jarrad Grant, Anthony Anastasio and Charlie Nastasi who all finished with bags of four while Patrick Veszpremi kicked three.
Around the ground, Cross was clearly among the best players and was joined by fellow Bulldogs listed team mates Mitch Wallis and Lachlan Hunter.
Playing his first game since the start of May, Cameron Wood was also impressive on return.
The former Collingwood and Brisbane ruckman has now been named in the Seagulls’ best players in three of his past four games.
The 30.27 (207) to 5.1 (31) win is Williamstown’s biggest for the season.
The Seagulls now sit in second place on the VFL ladder with a 5-2 win/loss record from the first seven games.
In what will be a blockbuster clash this week, Williamstown will meet fellow top four occupant Port Melbourne.
