STREET performances and public art displays are part of a new council plan to revitalise Sunshine Town Centre.
The Sunshine Rising Business Plan 2012-2017 adopted at a council meeting last week, aims to reposition the town centre as one of Melbourne’s premier multi-functional activity centres.
The plan will promote a new image for the town centre by improving its physical appearance and increasing the number of community events and activities.
Council will install public art displays across the centre and increase street performances in a bid to boost the suburbs reputation as a safe and attract place to visit.
The council will also advocate for increased commuter parking at Sunshine and Albion stations and construct cycling infrastructure throughout the town centre.
Brimbank Administrator Meredith Sussex said the “exciting and ambitious program” would ensure Sunshine Centre “becomes the centre it was once and it will be again.”
“I am delighted that this report has come to us,” Ms Sussex said.
“It has been a lot of hard work.”
Sunshine Town Centre is the largest centre in Brimbank which employs around 2,600 people and has more than 470 business, services and activities.
Melbourne’s West is one of the fastest growing regions in Australia and it is estimated that Sunshine will grow by 7,269 residents by 2021.
The development of the Regional Rail Link is expected to bring more people to the suburb.
