STUDENTS of Copperfield College were treated to a theatre play at their school last week to promote good health practices.
The play, performed by the ILBIJERRI Theatre Company, focused on raising health literacy and awareness of hepatitis C among adolescents.
The play follows the journey of three teenagers who experiment with at-risk activities such as piercing, tattooing and blood sharing.
Campus principal of Copperfield College Sydenham Campus, Suzanne Minkevicius, said the students enjoyed actively learning.
“The kids respond exceedingly well,” Ms Minkevicius said.
“They really understood the underlying issues it was talking about and that was really important for us,” she said.
“It’s very much on their level, it uses examples and language, it’s comical in places, but it has a really strong message.”
Ms Minkevicius said Hep C was an important topic for students to be aware of, since most students had piercings and some students would consider tattooing.
“It’s to make sure they have enough awareness to make good decisions in the future,” Ms Minkevicius said.
It is the second time the theatre company performed at the school, and Ms Minkevicius hoped to have them back again next year.
“I think it makes it more real for them, it’s an experience that’s out of the normal classroom,” she said.
“This particular groups is very well received, it’s quite funny and it’s very non-judgemental and its very much on the student level. We will definitely be looking to engage them again next year.”
The play is one of the many activities the school engages to inform students of safe health practices.
