At sea for all

HOBSONS Bay residents – from all walks of life – will be able to set sail on the ocean, thanks to an innovative new education program.

The Royal Yacht Club of Victoria in Williamstown and its partners will offer sailing courses for people with a disability throughout 2013 after successfully completing a two-year pilot project.

The Nelson Place club finished piloting the ‘Sailability – the Next Step’ program last month.

During its testing phase the 10-week program hosted people with acquired brain injuries, intellectual disabilities, Parkinson’s disease and stroke survivors.

The RYCV partnered with Yachting Victoria, Williamstown Community and Education Centre and Hobsons Bay City Council to deliver the courses during 2011 and 2012.

Funding from Sport and Recreation Victoria enabled them to develop the program.

Participants take to the water in small boats with sling-style seats that can’t tip over.

The course is open to people over 12 years old.

The club has also created a new membership category for graduates of the course.

The course will be offered at various times this year at a cost of $330 per participant.
