Door-knock tricksters target elderly

HOBSONS Bay Police have warned residents to be wary of door-knockers asking for money.

On 17 January, a young male and female knocked on the door of an elderly man’s home in Williamstown.

Senior Constable Sharon Radau said the couple stated they were present to collect money for unpaid bills and asked him to hand over cash.

The elderly man said a relative helped to pay all his bills and he wasn’t aware of any unpaid money, and the offenders left his property.

Sen Const Radau said the couple were both Caucasian, aged in their twenties and the male was wearing a blazer with a lanyard around his neck.

Sen Const Radau said residents should never hand over cash to strange doorknockers or promise to get money for such people.

“Ask them to write down their name, identification number, company and a contact phone number.  Never give out any of your personal details,” Sen Const Radau said.

“If you experience an incident like this, ring 000 immediately or if this has happened to you recently, report it to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.”
