THE Alaskan Malamute is a unique breed of dog known for its intelligence and affection – and a large number are looking for a temporary home.
Alaskan Malamute Rehoming Aid Australia (AMRAA) is committed to the rescue and rehoming of Alaskan Malamutes or Malamute crosses and educating people on the unique breed.
Melton West resident and AMRAA Victorian Branch co-ordinator Michele Nimmo said the organisation was in desperate need of more foster carers to reduce the number of dogs currently boarding at kennels in New South Wales.
“NSW is our busiest state and to make room for other dogs on death row in the pounds, we have had to transport the dogs to Victoria or South Australia, even Queensland to go into foster care,” Ms Nimmo said.
“The dogs and AMRAA need their help to be able to continue as there is a never-ending supply of unclaimed, abandoned dogs on death row in the pounds and shelters.”
“We can’t do it without foster carers, supporters and people who wish to donate to a good cause and know it is all going on the dogs.”
Ms Nimmo estimates about $40,000 each year was spent on kennelling, vet fees for usual procedures, as well as any health conditions needing surgery or treatment.
“Community support with financial assistance or sponsorship is the only way we can continue to help this beautiful and unique breed.”
She said Malamutes had specific requirements, so it was not easy to find appropriate foster homes or adoptees, but it was a valuable experience for many foster carers.
“By opening up their heart and home temporarily for a dog, they can save its life and get so many other benefits.
“Whether it be fostering, transporting, donating funds, goods or your time – you will make a difference in a life.”
