Mayor engineers study help

HOBSONS Bay mayor Renee Caruana will contribute funds from her mayoral program to provide scholarships for budding local engineers.
Two awards of $500 will be made annually for the next three years to Hobsons Bay residents undertaking engineering subjects at local schools in conjunction with Victoria University.
Cr Caruana said the scholarships would encourage students in Hobsons Bay to pursue careers in engineering or technical disciplines.
“Hobsons Bay is an industrial precinct. I believe it can also be a learning precinct,” Cr Caruana said.
There are three schools offering engineering subjects at senior secondary level: Bayside Secondary College, Laverton Secondary College and Mount Saint Joseph’s Girls College.
Cr Caruana said there was anecdotal evidence to suggest Australia was importing workers from overseas to address skill shortages, which the scholarship program would help address.
After a selection process by Victoria University staff the recipients will be presented with their awards later this year.
