THE 24th annual Williamstown Swimming and Surf Life Saving Club’s Australia Day Swim is on Sunday 26 January.
Club president Iain Dickson said they wanted to encourage swimmers to enter the event and start focusing on training – with a group of friends or family.
“Now is the time for people to focus on their swim preparations for the summer season,” Mr Dickson said.
Race director Simone Trigger and said the swim day is the club’s major fundraising event for the year.
“The greater community of Williamstown is aware of the WSLSC but may not have any direct contact with it,” Ms Trigger said.
“The Australia Day Swim is an opportunity for the club to present itself to the greater community by demonstrating the contribution that it makes.”
She said it was also an opportunity to bring swimmers from all over Australia to the historic bayside suburb of Williamstown with past winners including some of the greats of Australian swimming.
The event attracts many swimmers in the categories Juniors (12-17 years), Open (18-29 years) Seniors (30-39 years, Masters (40-49 years), Veterans (50-59 years) and Veterans Plus (60 years and over).
There are three events over a distance of 1km, 2km and 5km.
Local Williamstown identity Mark Davis, director of Stonehenge, is continuing to support the local community and will be a major sponsor of the Australia Day Swim.
Greg Hocking Elly Partners are also getting behind the event. Director Wayne Elly is a strong believer in supporting the local community and acknowledges the work carried out by volunteer lifesavers and members of the club.
