A DISCO in Williamstown has provided young people with a fun and safe environment for the past 25 years and they’re not done dancing.
Next month on Friday 15 November the Williamstown Blue Light Disco will celebrate 25 years of operation.
Williamstown Blue Light Disco President Harry Dumergue has been part of the committee of volunteers who have been dedicated to running the event since it began.
Mr Dumergue said the disco’s aim is for children to have fun in a safe environment in which to enjoy themselves.
“They provide a safe place for teenagers to have a night out without the risks of alcohol and drugs,” he said.
Group treasurer Helene Deahl is another of the group’s life members.
Ms Deahl said what keeps the disco going is the dedicated people that volunteer their time every month to ensure its success.
“Any of these initiatives that people put together, what keeps them going is the committed adults that put the time in,” she said.
Mr Dumergue said most importantly the volunteers are there to keep the kids entertained.
“They can rely on us to be here, we entertain them and they love it, as long as they continue to enjoy it we’ll keep going.”
Victoria has 41 Blue Light Disco’s operating throughout the state. Off duty police and civilians are involved in the disco supervision.
The next disco that will celebrate 25 years of operation will be held on 15 November, at the Newport Baptist Hall, Newport 7.30pm to 9.30pm.
Past disco volunteers and attendees are invited to attend the upcoming celebrations. For more information, contact Harry on 0400 562 145.
