A BROOKLYN abattoir was fined $5400 after Yarraville residents complained about odours traced to overflowing waste water from its treatment plant.
Baybrick Pty Ltd was found to have breached an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) licence that limits odours to the boundaries of its Industry Park Drive site.
The EPA received 10 reports about the incident on 31 May.
EPA regional manager Scott Maloney said waste water flowed under a fence and into a storm water drain alongside the Sunshine-Newport railway line at Brooklyn.
“An EPA investigation traced the odour from the residential parts of Yarraville to the waste water tank at the rendering plant."
The company immediately stopped the overflow when it was discovered.
A Baybrick spokesperson said upgrades had been made to sewage treatment facilities, which would prevent a similar incident occurring again.
EPA Victoria encourages the community to report pollution incidents to its watchline on 9695 2777.
