A WILLIAMSTOWN ferry operator says licensing measures introduced by Parks Victoria, to calm bitter disputes over berthing at Gem Pier, have put his business in jeopardy.
Williamstown Charters owner Mick Tresize said he was deliberately overlooked when Parks Victoria sought expressions of interest for a time-share system for ferry operators at the pier.
The previous system had all but broken down, with disputes and spoiling tactics employed by ferry operators to ensure they had access.
Mr Tresize said the berths were open to tender, and he fulfilled all the criteria to the letter, but was overlooked by Parks Victoria, after running his ferry service for more than 20 years.
He said the move was a deliberate attempt to push him out of the Williamstown market, following past disputes with Parks Victoria.
Parks Victoria manager of maritime safety Paul Dartnell denied any discrimination against Mr Tresize, or Williamstown Charters, saying licensing decisions were made on purely business grounds.
“No-one in Parks Victoria has a gripe against anyone.
“We tried to assess the applications objectively and followed all the probity rules. We did our best to meet everyone’s requirements.
“It was genuinely a very objective, fair and honest process, and we did try to include everyone.” However, Mr Tresize said the decision was unfair and would likely mean the end of his business.
“I wasn’t asking for anything more than I’ve had for the past 20 years. I do scenic tours from Williamstown and that’s all I want to do.
“This decision will immediately take 30 per cent of my livelihood away. It makes the difference between being viable or not.”
Mr Dartnell said the service offered by Mr Tresize actually made him a more appealing operator, as he was a unique presence in the market.
“We want diversity of product and Mick offers some fishing trips and $5 cruises that some of the other operators don’t offer.
“The more competition we have, without people getting in each other’s way, the better the service will be. That’s what we’re really on about.”
