AN OUTSTANDING defensive effort from Caroline Springs saw the Lakers rocket to their first win of the Western Region Football League season on Saturday after defeating Albanvale by 56 points. The Lakers conceded just two goals throughout the afternoon, while booting 10 majors of their own to help secure the 10.16 (76) to 2. 8 (20) victory.
Steven Mellon was the dominant forward on the ground, kicking three goals while seven Caroline Springs players finished with one goal each.
For Albanvale, Nathan Cuthbertson was the only goal scorer.
Saturday’s win was made even sweeter for the large crowd at Town Centre Oval which had gathered for the Caroline Springs Ladies’ Day.
Participants enjoyed a great day with the on-field action and with a number of stalls from local businesses in the clubrooms.
“Once a year we have our ladies’ day and it is always a really big success,” Caroline Springs committee member Sonia Mellon said.
“It is for all the ladies, from the juniors to the seniors, to come down and mingle together and get to know different ladies from all the way through the club.
“We want to give back to the mums that support the kids and the husbands every week.”
The weekend’s result sees the Lakers move up to eighth spot on the WRFL Division 2 ladder with a 1-3 win/loss record.
This week Caroline Springs will take on top of the table Manor Lakes.
Elsewhere in Division 2, Glen Orden defeated Sunshine Heights, and Sanctuary Lakes defeated North Sunshine.
