WILLIAMSTOWN CYMS stormed to their first win of the Victorian Amateur Football Association season on Saturday, after defeating Ormond by 33 points.
It was a slow start to the match for the CYs after falling behind by 20 points at quarter-time.
However, a seven goal to none second quarter turned the momentum of the match and allowed Williamstown to open up an unassailable lead.
Ben Gray was outstanding for the CYs, kicking three goals to be named best on ground.
He was well supported by Steven Barlow who also booted three goals in the 15.13 (103) to 10.10 (70) win.
Saturday’s match served as a special Anzac Day tribute game with the Williamstown RSL and the CYs hosting a pre-game lunch before on field tributes to Australia’s servicemen and women took place.
Football Williamstown chairman Bill Deller said the CYs had wanted to do something to recognise the Anzacs for a number of years.
“For the last couple of years, whenever we have played on the Saturday closest to Anzac Day and we have played at home, our president Peter Welsh used to get out and say a few words in recognition of the Anzacs,” Deller said.
“Late last year we did a sponsorship deal with the local RSL.
“It started to gather legs and become possible to do what we wanted to do. With them (the RSL) on board and Ormond Football Club, it has been terrific.”
Deller said both clubs were keen to make the Anzac Day weekend match a traditional fixture on the VAFA calendar.
“We will be continuing it,” Deller said.
“That will be part of our season forever now. If Ormond and us are in the same competition or same division we will do it year by year. One year here, one year there but if we get in a different division then our aim will be to do it every year.”
The weekend’s win sees Williamstown move into seventh spot on the VAFA ladder with a 1-2 win/loss record through the first three rounds of the season.
This Saturday the CYs will take on Hampton Rovers.
