Jobs boost from $21 million prison expansion

THE Dame Phyllis Frost Centre will undergo a massive redevelopment after the State Government launched an 84-bed expansion last week.
Corrections Minister Andrew McIntosh said the $21 million project would increase the centre’s capacity to 344 beds, allowing greater focus on rehabilitation programs for female prisoners.
Mr McIntosh said the expansion would add a two-storey block with 48 cells, and three house-style units to accommodate 12 prisoners each in a self-contained living environment.
He said the centre was high on the government’s list of priorities and he was thrilled to begin the project, which would not only deliver additional space but would also create local jobs during construction and full-time positions for prison staff.
“In addition to the extra 84 beds, the $21 million expansion will provide additional facilities including an industries area, and extension to the prison kitchen and a new stores area,” Mr McIntosh said.
“When it is complete, this expansion will play a major role in catering for additional demand within the prison system.
