THE Eynesbury Eagles have only been playing competitive cricket for three weeks but they can already boast about an impressive piece of club history.
The Eagles have two teams competing in the Western Suburbs United Churches Cricket Association’s one-day competition, and last week one particular effort by Eynesbury Black was nothing short of astonishing.
Taking on the Altona Roosters, the Eagles stunningly chased down 322 runs in just 33 overs at a run rate of almost 10 an over to win an extremely high-scoring and entertaining game of cricket.
The chase was led by twin brothers Justin and Matthew Siedlecki, who combined for 243 runs.
Justin managed to score 84, but it was Matthew’s 159 that stole the show.
A modest Matthew admits he went into his innings initially thinking his side’s mammoth target was too great to successfully chase down.
“At the start I thought we had no chance, but there were about four or five of us that thought that if we don’t pull our heads in, we will get beaten,” he said.
“I knew that we were chasing about nine an over, so my aim was to put my head down and to get on with the run rate.”
Eagles’ captain Stuart Peters said it was one of the most remarkable games he had ever played in throughout his long career.
“It was the captaining highlight of my career,” Peters said.
“I’ve captained a few sides and this one here would be the highlight because you just don’t dream of that many runs to be made in one day.”
“It was just a real thrill and an enjoyable game to be involved in.”
