IT’S taken a lot of hard work, but in a matter of just months the Burnside Heights Football Club has gone from initial planning to ready to compete in the Essendon District Football League.
All that is left is for more enthusiastic juniors to join the Bears at the club’s upcoming registration day.
From there, president Justin Peagram will know how many teams Burnside will field in its inaugural season.
“It looks like we will be able to field teams in the under 10s, under 12s and under 14s which is great.
There is even an outside possibility that we may be able to get a second under 10s team off the ground,” Peagram said.
“From that point of view, we’ve gone from hoping for one team, to possibly having three teams which will exceed our expectations.
“The feedback from parents has been very positive; they are really happy with what we are doing and are keen to come and join the party.”
Peagram said the club had received an incredible amount of support from sponsors and community grants, which would allow Burnside to be one of the most well-equipped junior clubs in the EDFL.
“We are really grateful for the fact we have got these guys on board, and that they are as excited as we are. Without their help, we would really be struggling,” he said.
“That pays for football jumpers and pays for all the equipment. We have pretty much got the best of everything. Whatever a junior club could dream of having, we have got. It’s not just things like footballs, but training equipment like speed ladders, agility drills and all that sort of stuff.
“We thought kids might be a bit sick of just running between witches hats, so we had a look at what the AFL clubs are doing these days and wanted to do that on a smaller level at our club.”
The news only gets better for Burnside players. All new recruits will receive a training top, baseball cap and football as part of their membership.
The Bears registration day will take place on
Sunday 12 February between 10.30am and 1.30pm at the Burnside Heights Recreational Reserve.
