FOR Isagani, playing the oboe is one of his favourite pastimes but don’t let his shy disposition fool you – the young muso is a true proficient.
Despite only playing the instrument for all of two years, the 12-year-old was offered a place this year at the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA).
Isagani said he couldn’t be happier but admitted he was nervous to be starting high school.
As the second youngest member in the Hobsons Bay City Band – Isagani’s mum said she believed being part of the band has been good for his confidence.
“They give him lots of encouragement and support,” she said.
“We are very lucky and very proud.”
Though the oboe is his favourite instrument, the Yarraville boy also plays the piano and violin.
Playing at grade five level, one of Isagani’s favourite compositions to play is ‘Gabriel’s Oboe’.
“I really like to play because it’s fun,” he said.
VCA is unlike most high schools, students must audition for a place and must be prepared to work to keep it.
Half the day is spent in normal academic classes with the other half spent in music classes.
The day for a VCA student is also longer than the average high school student, starting at 8.30am and finishing at 4.30pm.
But Isagani said he’s ready for the challenge and is excited to start next week.
