A WOMAN remains in a critical condition and a community has been left in shock following a brutal attack in Altona.
The 61-year-old woman was found in a pool of blood in her Harrington Square bookshop.
Local traders fear the attacker, who remains at large, may strike again.
The victim, Jill Brookes, was left with substantial injuries to her head and upper body in what police described as a “cowardly” attack.
Her injuries were so severe that the Homicide Squad was initially called in but the investigation has since been handed over to the Altona Crime Investigation Unit.
Altona Traders Association President Kim Walsh said many Harrington Square traders feel unsafe in their workplaces.
“It’s terrible people can’t feel safe in their own shops and go about earning an honest living,” he said.
Mr Walsh said a meeting between shopkeepers and police was held last Thursday.
“(The meeting was) to try and advise them to look after their personal safety and keep an eye open for each other.
“(Altona) is a peaceful town and every now and then we have something like this happen and it’s very disturbing.”
Police are yet to determine a motive for the crime and set up an information caravan last Friday to urge witnesses to come forward.
