Methyl bromide continues to cause angst

By VANESSA CHIRCOP
HOBSONS Bay City Council has received another petition with more than 400 signatures calling on the council to reject an application to use methyl bromide at 407 Douglas Pde.
The petition also called on the Federal Government to immediately ban the use of the ozone-depleting gas in Australia.
Upon receiving the petition Councillor Angela Altair said it clearly demonstrated the level of angst among residents when it came to the use of methyl bromide.
As reported by Star previously, residents rallied in force at Digman Reserve in Newport earlier this month to oppose the use of methyl bromide near their homes.
Container Fumigation Services has applied to the council for a planning permit to use the gas, which has been linked to respiratory, kidney and neurological problems, to fumigate containers at 407 Douglas Pde, Spotswood – a few hundred metres from homes and a children’s playground.
