MELTON City Council welcomed its 94th mayor this week when Cr Bob Turner was elected unopposed.
Upon entering the chamber as Mayor, the Coburn Ward councillor received a rousing applause from his peers and members of the gallery and was praised for his work ethic and positive and friendly demeanour at Tuesday night’s statutory meeting.
In his first speech as Mayor Cr Turner thanked his family, in particular his wife Val, for their ongoing support and said he was “honoured and humbled” to represent “the great city” of Melton.
Having lived in Melton for well over two decades, Cr Turner has been a long-time advocate of improving health services in the area, including the number of GPs and reducing surgery waiting periods. He has also supported road and rail transport improvements and has called for improvements to the education system in particular the areas of apprenticeships and adult training facilities.
Cr Turner is also a tireless volunteer and, with his wife, co-founded The Gap almost two years ago.
“I look forward to representing the City of Melton,” Cr Turner said at Tuesday night’s meeting.
“There is no doubt in my mind that we live in the best city in Australia … it’s a beautiful and progressive city to live in.”
