Dunny of togetherness

NEW public toilets are in use at Laurieton following a joint project involving Port Macquarie-Hastings Council, the Rotary Club of Laurieton and the Camden Haven Chamber of Commerce.

The toilets, in Bruce Porter Reserve opposite the Laurieton skate facility, were opened for use last month.
Port Macquarie-Hastings mayor Peter Besseling said the project was a great example of council partnering with community groups to deliver much-needed infrastructure at a reduced cost to ratepayers.
He said it was an approach he would like to see used more, given the enormous cost of delivering new infrastructure across such a large local government area.
Council was approached by Rotary and the Chamber of Commerce in early 2010 with a proposal to upgrade and enhance Bruce Porter Reserve.
Given the importance of the foreshore reserve to the community and its popularity with local residents and visitors to the Laurieton area, it was agreed council would develop a masterplan capturing the community’s long-term strategic vision for the reserve.
Cr Besseling said the amenities block represented the first stage of the master plan implementation process.
It includes a storage space and four unisex toilets with the total cost, approximately $90,000, shared between council, Rotary and the Chamber of Commerce. Additional power points have been provided to support community events such as the Riverwalk Markets.
