FORGET Tony Abbott and Kevin Rudd, the people of Port Macquarie say they are more interested in what happens in their backyard.
As the country goes to the polls on Saturday, either Mr Abbott or Mr Rudd will lead the next government, but voters in Lyne are concerned about their electorate.
“Rob Oakeshott might have copped plenty of flak in the media, but he was very well-liked in Port Macquarie because he delivered important funding,” local resident Betty Saunders said.
“The pressure is going to be on the next MP to live up to that standard.
“It was a unique situation having Rob Oakeshott as an Independent in a hung parliament, but it worked for Port Macquarie and Lyne.”
Wauchope resident Bob Chapman said although it looked like David Gillespie would win and be a part of a Coalition Government, voters shouldn’t take things for granted.
“I know the polls say it’s going to be Liberal and Tony Abbott will be the Prime Minister, but what if it’s a Labor government and we have a Nationals member, or the other way around,” he said.
“I doubt we’ll see the same kind of money heading to Lyne as we did in the current term, but whoever steps up is going to have that pressure put on them.
“I think it will be closer than what people think when the results come out on Saturday night.”
