Australia at heart of art

Two new exhibitions are set to inspire at the Glasshouse.

Inspired by Australia’s new-found fascination for food and lifestyle, ‘Afternoons in the Summertime’, takes a step back into time to explore Australian food and leisure in the early 20th century.

A selection of objects from the Port Macquarie Historical Society and Museum, as well as artworks by renowned Australian artists, will provide insight into Australian lifestyles in the early 20th century. Amongst the artists on display is Walter Withers — considered to be one of Australia’s Master Artists.

Walter Withers is famous as one of the original Heidelberg School of painters.

The Heidelberg School is considered by many to be the most famous school of painting in Australian history and it represents an Australian version of Impressionism.

The Heidelberg is recognised by most Australians as epitomising the spirit of the Australian landscape.

The freely applied paint and colours captured a sense of light and heat peculiar to the Australian climate.

Also new at the Glasshouse Gallery is the local exhibition ‘Living on the Edge’.

This exhibition explores the excitement and the uncertainty of contemporary life and features over 40 artworks from a cross section of Hastings Valley Fine Art Association members. The Hastings Valley Fine Art Association was formed 25 years ago when a group of enthusiastic painters from around the Hastings Valley/Port Macquarie area formed a non-profit art group which currently has over 150 members from across the Mid-North Coast.
